“The techniques have helped me so much… I didn’t go out for three months. Because of the counselling, I can go out – I know I can manage how I feel.”
Amna (name changed), Snowdrop Client
The Snowdrop Project Counselling Service stands as a beacon of hope, healing and humanity for survivors of modern slavery and exploitation in South Yorkshire.
Rooted in a trauma-informed, person-centred and phenomenological philosophy, the service offers a compassionate and holistic approach that honours each individual’s unique journey. By removing barriers to access, fostering long-term therapeutic relationships and integrating innovative bottom-up practices, Snowdrop creates a safe and empowering space where survivors can reclaim their sense of self and agency.
Guided by values such as trust, empathy, equality, and love, the service not only supports recovery but also affirms the sacredness and dignity of every human life. In doing so, the Snowdrop Project redefines what it means to provide truly inclusive, responsive, and transformative care.
We are aware that individuals who have experienced exploitation and modern slavery have experienced misuse of power in relationships. Therefore, the therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client is the foundation of our work. This relationship is collaborative, and we encourage clients to take ownership of their counselling journey. We aim to reduce the power dynamic between counsellor and client, and facilitate an organic movement towards growth.
We base our therapies on the understanding that restoring the emotional part of the brain and repairing the limbic system can be achieved in various ways:
- Psychotherapies related to the brain, mind, and body
- Expressive therapies through language, art, music, and dance,
- Complementary therapies through body work
We therefore provide Complementary Therapies which work alongside our Counselling service. These therapies include trauma-informed yoga, shiatsu, acupuncture and our Hope Box group, which is a seven-week programme where clients create a physical box filled with objects to help them regulate their emotions and calm their nervous system.
Many clients are unable to access therapeutic support due to limited English or a lack of childcare. We address both of these barriers by providing safe and trusted interpreters for those who need them, and trained staff to look after children during counselling. As there is limited access to NHS counselling for survivors, and due to our ability to provide interpreting and childcare, we have seen a 263% increase in referrals to our counselling service over the last 12 months.
